The Prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is going to setup base in Goa.

The Central Government of India has approved a scheme on public-private partnership basis to establish an IIT institute on Goan soil at Farmagudi.  IIT Institutes in India have gained world-wide reputation for creating some of the brightest students with their innovative study programs and emphasis on inculcating strong skilled based training. An IIT institute in Goa would be a huge boost towards developing skilled based opportunities among the Indian youth. The Goa Government has been prompt to respond and have swiftly already identified land at the Farmagudi Engineering Complex and is in the process of finalizing the private partners. The land would be made available for free of cost by the Goa Government and IIT would be established at a capital cost of Rs.100 to Rs.150 crore to be contributed in the ratio of 85:15 by the Central Government and the industry partner respectively.

Dr. M M Pallam Raju, Union Human Resources Development Minister of India said that the IIT is being setup as per the Central Government scheme, wherein Goa is one amongst 20 states identified for the purpose of setting up an IIT institute. Dr. Raju also strongly stressed on the fact that setting up an Institute like IIT would boost the career prospects of students, and the local Goans would not have to travel outside of Goa to pursue high quality skilled based education. The Chief Minister of Goa, Mr. Manohar Parrikar has assured that the construction work for the institution building would commence by December 2013.
